herpes, an evil that infects the whole world. More than 3.7 billion people under the age of 50, or 67% of the population, are infected with the herpes virus type 1 (HSV-1). This is highlighted by the WHO in a report published in PLOS ONE magazine.
Herpes virus infections are caused by two types of virus, both of which are highly contagious. Cold sores are related to the Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). This is transmitted mainly by contact with the oral mucous membranes and gives what is commonly called the sore.
Genital herpes is caused by the Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). It is transmitted sexually through skin contact and can cause painful genital ulcers, reminds the WHO.
140 million people aged 15 to 49 have already had cold sores, finds the WHO. Foci are mainly in the Americas, Europe and the Western Pacific.
These labial herpes occur especially in adulthood with sexuality and following oral sex. “Access to education and information about both types of herpes and about sexually transmitted infections is crucial to protecting the health of young people before they are sexually active,” Dr. Marleen Temmerman, WHO Director of Reproductive Health and Research.
An “incurable” virus
As for thegenital herpes417 million people aged 15 to 49 have already caught it.
Faced with the extent of contamination by the herpes virus, Dr. Temmerman stresses the importance of “improving the collection of data concerning the two types of herpes virus and sexually transmitted infections in general”.
Remember that once you have caught the herpes virus, it cannot be completely eliminated. It can appear at different times of life randomly. But it is possible to limit the occurrence of these herpes outbreaks with antivirals such as valaciclovir (preventive treatment).
